Code of Ethics

It’s that time again!  The National Association of REALTORS® latest Ethics Requirement Cycle begins on January 1, 2017, and has switched from a four year to a two year cycle. REALTORS® are required to complete a minimum of 2.5 hours of the Code of Ethics training, and December, 31 2018 is the deadline for the current cycle.  Failure to comply with this required ethics training is a violation of a membership duty, for which the member’s primary association will suspend membership until the training is complete.

Appraisers must meet this membership requirement and are not exempt.  The only REALTORS® exempt from this requirement are REALTORS® with REALTOR® Emeritus status.

NOTE: This is a National Association of REALTORS® mandate; NOT a requirement of the Tennessee Real Estate Commission's continuing education course requirement.

There are lots of training options, and it’s possible you’ve already fulfilled the requirement:

STEP ONE: Determine if you need the training

If you have successfully completed one of the following since January 1, 2017, then you have satisfied the REALTOR® Code of Ethics (COE) training requirements:

  • Attended a live (COE) class at KAAR;
  • Attended a new member orientation;
  • Completed NAR's online COE course (for new or existing members); or
  • Completed online COE course through or

To verify that your record accurately reflects a COE course you have already taken or completed online, visit first; if you don't see it posted there, login to your NAR account to check your education records.  Find the heading "Other Links" and click "View Your Education Records."  Click "View Your Education Records" again on the following page.

If you don't see a completed requirement record for 2017 or 2018, refer to Step Two below to review your options to fulfill the requirement.

STEP TWO: Fulfill the REALTOR® Code of Ethics Requirement

If you have determined that you need to complete the COE requirement, you can fulfill the requirement by:

  • Best Option - Free NAR online ethics class (no CE); Click COE Online. (You will need your NRDS number.) For a video tour, click COE Video Tour. While there is no CE credit for this, it’s fast, free and satisfies the COE requirement.
  • Attending a COE class at KAAR;
  • Taking the four-hour COE online course through KAAR's continuing education online provider The CE Shop or
  • Taking NAR's online REALTOR® Code of Ethics course for new or existing members for 3 CE ($29.95)

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you take the class any other way besides KAAR or the NAR online course, you must submit confirmation of completion to KAAR. To do this you may either e-mail to Teresa Tillery or mail a copy of your certificate of completion to KAAR - Attention: Teresa Tillery, 609 Weisgarber Rd, Knoxville, TN 37919.
